The interdisciplinary and international symposium „Gender_Language_Politics” is the concluding event of the gender focus during the 2015 anniversary program (http://www.univie.ac.at/en/650/celebrating-with-us/gender-justice-focus). It will focus on discussing forms of making visible and hiding women in public space from the perspective of linguistics, media studies and political science.

In terms of discourse theory, the central points of language, gender and politics form what one might call a dialectic triad, being irrevocably interwinded – language, gender and politics determine and influence each other.

In everyday life, in society and the media, too, we see the consequences of this complex, uneasy relationship. These become apparent, for instance, in questions of the representation and discursive construction of female politicians in/by the media, the reactions by a given society to the political call for more visibility of gender in language, in pseudo-feminist arguments against women openly embracing their faith, but also in other strategies of cooptation (or exclusion) of women in politics and other social fields.
